The Ring, Part 2

It isn't the largest ring and he didn't need to save for months to buy it.

...but...

It is the perfect ring and it was exactly what I wanted.

After months of changing my mind on what type of ring I really wanted. I finally made a decision. I knew that the ring I wanted would be something very simple and classic and I also knew that my mom happened to have a ring (unused in a drawer) that was almost exactly what I would buy from a jewelry store. As I made the decision, I felt a sense of urgency- I needed to tell Nate how I felt and break my "wait patiently until December" goal.

That morning at breakfast I let him know, "just so you know... if you ever want to give me a ring... I'd really like to use one that my mom has." That was pretty much the entire conversation. Oh, but he did ask if the ring was "an old lady ring"... because he really hates "old lady" stuff for some reason (maybe because I keep bringing it home from thrift stores?).

I was lucky that I finally made that decision because I later found out that I happened to tell Nate the exact day that he had planned to go out and buy a ring! He had been putting money aside for months, but now had a completely different task ahead of him- asking my parents for the ring. Knowing how shy he is, I'm sure it was tough sitting down with my parents and asking them to hand over a piece of jewelry that they had for years. Finding out that he did all of that without my knowledge was the biggest shocker of it all!

So, no, I don't have an expensive or carefully chosen ring, but I do have a thoughtfully requested piece of jewelry that has been in my family for over 100 years...

And because the wedding blogs tell me I have to take pictures of rings in flowers:

Okay, so I'm obviously not the type that goes out and gets manicures (sorry!).

I think my great-great grandmother had excellent style and I'm very excited to wear this ring, but I'm also excited to do a little shopping of my own for an amazing "pass down through the generations" band.
Stay tuned!

Do you have an heirloom piece of jewelry? Would you consider passing along your ring to other members of your family in the future?

It's perfect! Family pieces are the best. I love the history of them! My ring was newly purchased. Not for lack of family jewelry - just my mom wasn't ready to part with any of it. But, to save any "fighting when she's dead" (morbid, right!?) she's already told my sister and me who gets what. At least she has agreed that if my hypothetical child wants one of "my" rings for their engagement, she'd let them have it then.

I meant to add that David was passed down his grandfather's wedding ring. I LOVE it!! However, with his job, it's not ideal (It has diamonds...and even after repair work, it's still not the sturdiest.) He used it at our ceremony and sometimes for dressy events / holidays... then we got him an "every day" ring for the rest of the time.

So pretty and even better that it has such a history! I really feel like I lucked out on my ring - I didn't tell my husband what I liked until after he had already purchased it and it's exactly what I would have picked out - and the diamond was his grandmother's, which makes it so special! I hope to pass it down someday. And having it saved us so much, which was important on his med school (nonexistent) budget.

After my grandmother passed away...2 months before my our wedding...I was given her diamond ring. I keep it put away for now and plan to pass it down. I love jewelry with meaning!

Perfect! It's really beautiful, and the fact that it's a family heirloom makes it that much more special!

Your ring is beautiful and so special. My husband's grandmother gave me her wedding ring that is 65 years old. I wear it on my right hand and it was my something old for the wedding.

Its perfect. Mine was a comprimise of our two styles. I would love to have my grandma's ring but my Aunt wont give it up!

The ring and the story are both absolutely lovely!

Also, on reading the phrase "the wedding blogs tell me I have to..." (yes, I know you were being sarcastic, but stick with me here) I'm reminded to direct you to my favoritest wedding blog of them all: apracticalwedding.com. If you haven't found it already, go there. Go there now. It's immensely helpful.

I am also wearing my great grandmother's ring! Similar story, and my hubby spent the money he saved on my ring on a gorgeous wedding band. He would have never been able to buy the two together! And, I'm so happy with it!

i wear my grandmother's engagement ring from the 1930's...my mother has promised my daughter her ring when she gets married...so maybe my granddaughter will wear my grandmother's ring?

hopefully that's a long time away, given she's only 10 :)

I love it! It is stunning! I only wish my vintage ring was a family heirloom. But, I'll take what I can get. :) Thanks for sharing!
